WHERE TO GET THE KEFIR GRAINS

To obtain the freshest milk or water kefir grains from a location near you we recommend using the Kefirhood portal. The portal follows the "sharing is caring" principle and enables you to search for other lovers of health cultures. In this way you will always get the best and the healthiest grains in the shortest time possible.
You can also buy fresh or dried kefir grains in several (online) organic food stores.

HOW TO MAIL KEFIR GRAINS

1. After washing the kefir grains, place  them in a small plastic zip bag. For 1 tsp of grains use 3 tbsp of cold water.

2. Add a pinch of sugar. Push out as much air as you can and close the bag.

 3. Put bag with kefir grains in one or two more plastic bags. It’s now ready for shipping.

4. For more safety you can use mail with air bubbles protection. With these techniques kefir grains will stay alive for about two weeks for sure.

HOW TO START MAKING MILK KEFIR

1. Put the kefir grains in a glass jar and fill it with about two cups of fresh or store bought milk.

2. Cover with a clean cap (not too tight to allow gas from the fermentation process to escape) and set aside at room temperature.

3. Wait for 24 hours, stirring periodically with a plastic spoon or twirling the jar to mix in the grains with the milk.

4. Strain out the kefir grains with a plastic strainer, put the grains back into a clean jar and repeat the steps 1, 2 and 3 until the grains are white and the mixture has a ”normal” smell and taste. This will take a couple of days, depending on the amount of kefir grains and milk used.
